Last Cred Review

Gold Rusher - SFMM

Just went to SFMM yesterday to finish getting all their creds. I only wanted to review this one because I actually had a really fun time on it. The line was… there was no line. We walked on, and all of the seats were empty, so we chose the back. My non-thoosie friend told me that it’s a crazy ride if you don’t hold on. And believe me.. it was. The double lap bar had at least seven inches between my thigh. There are many sudden airtime moments, and one of the most recognized one is that double down. You get FLUNG out of your seat, and that probably gave more -gs than twisted colossus (don’t believe me there’s a chance I’m wrong).

After a first time trip to Parc Asterix :

Toutatis - Just as I expected, I absolutely loved this one. That backwards launch proved to be absolutely relentless with some extremely powerful ejector airtime (a feeling that I've not really had on any other coaster before besides Ice Breaker). The trim-brake on the top hat didn't actually ruin the experience for me at all. Yes, it would have been nice to fly over the top hat and get some airtime, but the feeling of hang-time instead was a rather pleasant surprise and allowed you to appreciate the views up there a little longer! Overall, great layout and punchy launches with some good theming in areas! 10/10.

OzIris - I had heard great things about this invert, so had pretty high expectations. First off, that drop! Easily the best first drop on any invert I've ridden (especially when on the back row). Now, the rest of the layout...hmm...slightly underwhelming. All the B&M inverts I had ridden before this were all relatively intense and had whippy inversions. OzIris however, felt like all of it's elements were more drawn out which lead to a less intense ride experience for me. Don't get me wrong, I still loved how it felt super floaty in some parts and I did feel like the layout was unique compared to other inverts, but maybe I was just expecting an old-school B&M invert instead.

Tonnerre 2 Zeus - This coaster certainly has a reputation, and most of it seems pretty negative! That may be why I was pleasantly surprised by my rides on it. Yes, it's not smooth at all 🤣. It's not jolty at all, but just extremely rattily, which I quite enjoyed and felt added to the overall fun and intensity of this coaster. There's some pretty sweet moments of airtime on this one (a lot of them were unexpected). The restraints also didn't bother me in the slightest, though I could see how they may be uncomfortable on some riders. Really enjoyed Zeus, and it was a solid #2 at the park for me.

Goudirix - Again, another one that had a pretty bad reputation! Whilst I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as Zeus, I still found myself wondering where all the hate comes from. The trains and restraints were absolutely fine (though I do understand they were recently upgraded). the layout had some pretty funky elements and whilst the transitions might not have been the smoothest, I found them to be really forceful, especially on the batwing. I must admit though, I think the park could do with knocking it down and replacing it with a lovely new-gen Vekoma like Lech as it does feel quite dated.

Pegase Express - This was such a fun family coaster! The first half was decent, with some nice floaty moments of airtime. But the backwards section was were it got really good! Loved those whippy left-right moments on the return journey to the station.

Trace Du Hourra - I've never really been bothered about these Mack Bobsled models as the only one I've ridden (Avalanche, BPB) was just too short and underwhelming for my liking. This one was a pleasant surprise however! The turns were extremely forceful and the layout was much longer than I excepted! I also loved how this one weaves through some rockwork. Super fun coaster!

Vol D'Icare - Break-run-the ride I called this one. All I can really say about Vol D'Icare is that it does a whole lot of nothing 🤣 Time for this one to go too I feel.

SOS Tournevis - Just a bog standard kids coaster....had to get the credit 🤣

Since we have a bunch of those threads reviewing movies or songs or whatever, I figured we could do the same for the last or one of the more recent creds you've been on. Always nice, especially considering many of us may not ride a ton of new creds at a time.

Mystic Timbers
After two years, I finally got on Timbers at Kings Island. Don't know what took me so long but you know. @Hyde and I rode it first in the front then the back and man, that thing threw you around. Definitely a fun and unique GCI in comparison to others. Airtime is great and the night ride is something to behold. I just need to ride it during the day to get a full feel. Also, the shed is stupid, but it's really nothing but a block brake so I'm not to fussed. Better then just sitting there.
Phew, my last cred was the Frank'n Coaster last fall. It's on the roof of a Burger King overlooking Niagara Falls. 2/10. Painful and left me quite frankly dazed for 20 minutes. The entrance and exit are both staircases in the dark. There's an air whoosh jumpscare on the way out. Fun to say you've been on it though!

Three from today (Junker was technically the last). I'll try to follow up with a proper trip report, but may take me a week or two to get to that.

Junker
I've heard good things about this, and I was pleasantly surprised. Punchy launch, solid airtime and a stall built before stalls were all the rage - very impressed! The train made a noise like it had a flat spot on the wheel, but couldn't feel a thing, and one train ops was dire, but overall very impressed and I can see why people like it.

Pitts Special
Shame the same can't be said for this. Decent airtime and layout, but lumpy, jolty, terrible shaping and, again, one train ops. Definitely only a looker. Just as I though my conceptions about Gerstlauer might be misplaced (see Junker, above), they reminded me why I can't yet take them seriously.

Thunderbird
This is mostly on me for being fairly blind to this, but blimey this is good. It's smooth (for a woodie, no jackhammering or shuddering or any of that stuff that can plague these), has a great layout and is very very enjoyable. Only gripe (aside, again, from the one train ops - albeit marginally more forgivable on a train that seats more than 8) was the stupid brake run where they've installed magnetic brakes but the slope is so shallow and there are no kicker wheels, which means the crawl out of the brakes into the station takes longer than the rest of the ride. Otherwise, fantastic!

PowerPark was great, all things considered. Their ops need looking at (I'll explain more on my trip report), but it's in a lovely location, a decent selection of coasters and felt very relaxed.

Tornado
For some reason I was expecting this to be a janky, but it was actually surprisingly good! Famous for its heartline rolls, and they actually deliver pretty well. It was smooth, had some decent forces and my only real criticism is that it seems to hemorrhage speed somehow. But I'm glad I've finally managed to tick it off - one of those creds I saw as a young enthusiast and was so intrigued by. Not quite "bucket list", but something bucket list-adjacent for sure.

Hyperia - Thorpe Park

Finally got back to Thorpe to ride Hyperia, after last visiting the week after it first (briefly) opened. Rode it on the 24th which was it's first birthday and all the ride staff were wearing gold party hats, which I thought was a nice touch (and the only actually gold thing on the ride...). This was also my 50th coaster in the UK! Review below, as copied from my post in the Top 10 thread.

The airtime on this is incredible, firmly out of my seat through most of the layout. The outerbanked turn/inversion turnaround thing is brilliant, between that or the stall afterwards for my favourite moments. Would probably be in my top 3 if it was longer and didnt have the "splashdown" trim brake interrupting the flow. Everything after that is still great with good airtime, just needs a bit more layout instead of that trim.

Last one from this trip.

Taiga
I don't think this is any particularly unusual opinion, but this ride is brilliant. The pacing, layout, forces and setting are all brilliant. The sequence after the top hat into the corner after the Immelmann is an almost perfect set of elements. A top 0.5% coaster for sure, maybe even top 0.1%. Bravo Intamin and Linnanmäki, bravo.

Rest of the park is rather nice too, albeit Taiga is the only thing that's genuinely top tier.

Tower Coaster - Zip World Tower

Sweet powered coaster, you get three goes and as long as you are under 170kg you can go as a pair. It seemed to get faster each go and is just a fun ride with a great view.

Also not to far away is a nice collection of waterfalls if you have time where you can walk behind one 😊

Top Thrill 2

Rode this a few times over the last 2 days. It's very good, a better overall ride than TTD.

The first launch though, pitiful. Icon like. Luckily it gets a lot better after that.

Kept breaking down too 🤔

I think I must of gotten lucky as I never saw it go down when I was there the other week, although I did see that they did have a Zamperla engineer on standby 👀

I went to Paultons Park on Thursday for the first time in 4 years and bagged 2 new credits in the process!

New coasters
Dino Chase (#136)
This has some surprising vigour for something so small, but it is what it is, really. It’s a small oval-shaped coaster that’s fun enough as a first coaster for young children, but has quite limited appeal for an older rider, I would argue. For me as an older rider, it was perfectly inoffensive, but also nothing to write home about; it really is a very small coaster. It’s decorated quite nicely, though, with some fun dinosaur animatronics around!
3/10, #119/137

Farmyard Flyer (#137)

This has absolutely beautiful theming (possibly some of the best I’ve seen on a kiddie coaster, I would argue), but as a ride experience, I thought it was profoundly average as smaller family coasters go. It’s a bit bigger and less embarrassing for adults to ride, but like Dino Chase, I would describe it as fun enough as an introductory coaster for young children, but something with quite limited appeal for an older rider. One thing I did notice is that while not rough per se, it surprisingly isn’t smooth for a 3 year old small family coaster; it’s definitely got some lumps and bumps, for sure!
3/10, #113/137

Previously ridden coasters
Storm Chaser
For a coaster with a 1m height restriction, Storm Chaser has a kick to it! It has some good speed to it and some surprisingly forceful moments for a family coaster; while it is quite a short ride, it holds its speed well, and that low helix has a real kick to it for a family coaster! The ride is also very smooth and comfortable, and as someone who isn’t a huge lover of things that spin excessively, I also think the ride has a good, fun level of spin to it without being excessive or too much for me to enjoy! All in all, then, I think Storm Chaser is a cracking family coaster with surprising vigour for a ride aimed at the family demographic, and it’s probably one of the best UK coasters you can ride at this height restriction level!
7/10, #41/137

Flight of the Pterosaur

As with Storm Chaser above, I think Flight of the Pterosaur is an absolutely excellent family coaster that is surprisingly vigorous given that relatively small children can ride it! I do like a suspended coaster, and even though it’s a family coaster, it has some good speed to it and hits some nice thrilling moments! In particular, I think the first drop is quite nice with how it swoops down over Lost Kingdom, and the ending helix is really quite forceful for a family coaster; it almost reminds me of a family version of Nemesis’ helix with how it swoops down, and I also think it has some really nice near misses! The trains and restraints are also lovely; the ride is very smooth, and with the bucket seat and overhead lap bar, the trains are so comfortable to sit in, which makes the ride very rerideable! Overall, I think Flight of the Pterosaur is a fantastic family coaster; like Storm Chaser, I think it’s probably one of the best UK coasters you can ride at this height restriction level, in my view! For me, I think it actually narrowly surpasses Storm Chaser as my favourite coaster on park; I do love the speed of an inverted coaster, and I just generally think Pterosaur is slightly more my cup of tea, as fun as Storm Chaser is. 9 times out of 10, I think I’d pick an invert over a spinner.
7/10, #39/137

Velociraptor

I wouldn’t say I go nuts for shuttle coasters in general, but Velociraptor is still a perfectly fun ride! I think the forwards section is fun, with some nice speed, a smooth ride experience and even a gentle pop of airtime depending on where in the train you’re sat! The backwards section is less my cup of tea, but even still, I think the ride is quite good fun overall. It’s probably my favourite of the family shuttle coasters I’ve ridden, beating out Accelerator at Drayton Manor as well as the two sides of Minifigure Speedway at Legoland Windsor.
6/10, #60/137

Cobra

Cobra has some fun moments; the ride does have some nice helixes and airtime hills! However, the wild mouse-type feel of it brings it down for me. I’m not a fan of those wild mouse-style turns and the harsh laterals they provide at all, so that section of Cobra stops me from rating it overly highly. It’s still far above any regular steel mouse for me, seeing as those turns are only a small section of a wider layout punctuated with other more fun elements, but the ride feels a little bit too wild mouse-adjacent for me to overly rave about it.
5/10, #70/137

Cat-O-Pillar

As smaller coasters go, I do quite like a Zierer Tivoli, and Cat-O-Pillar is not a bad example of the genre! While it does only have the one figure 8, it’s smooth, it has some fun moments of mild speed, and it also has that ever-quirky Tivoli charm in that it has a ridiculously long train, meaning that when you ride towards the front, you almost seem to speed up going upwards rather than downwards!

After a first time visit to Europa Park, here's my thoughts on some of my favourite coasters there :

Voltron - I don't even know where to start with this one. The whole area itself was beautiful, and the theming inside the queue/station is just stunning - absolutely loved the singing tesla coils too! Knowing it was a Mack coaster, I wasn't expecting much from the launches....boy was I in for a shock 🤣. That beyond vertical launch had a really good punch to it and has got to be one of the weirdest sensations I've felt on a coaster before! Plenty of great, whippy inversions in there, so many moments of airtime and easily the strongest ejector airtime I've felt on any coaster out there (beats the RMCs in that regard). The layout has a great length to it (I did expect the turntable to kill the pacing a little bit, but its definitely needed as both the first and second half of this coaster are just bonkers). Love the design of the trains and despite me sitting on nearly every kind of seat during my trip, I never had one issue with any rattle/roughness. Granted, it's not butter smooth so it isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but it's just pure intensity the whole way round, and doesn't feel like your traditional Mack coaster at all - and that's another reason why I absolutely adore this coaster. Perfect coaster, amazingly themed, comfy trains, crazy airtime.... I'll be posting my updated Top 10 straight after this 👀.

Silver Star - Didn't know what to expect with this hyper as I hadn't heard much about it, but I was pleasantly surprised! The airtime was definitely more floater than anything else but again, another smooth B&M coaster that you just can't complain about. I really enjoyed the 2nd half of the layout too, that little pop of ejector you get after the MCBR is great fun and loved the little whippy S-Bend near the end. Although I did really enjoy this coaster, it definitely ranks as my third favourite B&M Hyper (Mako at #1, Shambhala at #2) as I just didn't find there to be anything special or stand-out about it compared to the others.

Wodan - Was great to add another wooden coaster to the list! Despite it being rather on the shorter side which did leave me feeling a bit "oh....where's the rest", the speed, intense pops of airtime and whippy side-to-side action more than makes up for it! I'd basically just describe it as a bigger and better Wicker Man as that's the only other GCI I've ridden. It's not quite my favourite wooden coaster (that title belongs to Balder) but it comfortably sits at #2 in that list.

Blue Fire - This one definitely needs time to warm up during the day I think as my morning rides on it were nothing spectacular. The launch did however take me by surprise, and again felt more punchy than the other Mack launches out there. Whilst I would easily rate this over something like Icon, I must admit I actually found the layout to be quite forceless and lacking any intensity, but still fun nonetheless! Also, love the theming in the indoor section 👍

Euro Mir - There's not too much I can really say on this one expect I absolutely loved it. Super catchy soundtrack, comfortable trains and yes....it was a little jolty, but I loved how forceful those turns are near the end! I must admit I'll be a little sad if Europa gets rid of this one.

Can Can Coaster - Another coaster that I absolutely loved! The theming is gorgeous inside, again with another great soundtrack as you go around the coaster itself. It has to be up there as one of the best indoor coasters in Europe for me.

One thing I just want to add is that the operations across this park were perfect. The virtual queue system worked wonders, as did the single rider queues. But even the main queues, whilst looking extremely busy, went down within 15-20 minutes max. which I certainly can't complain about! Europa Park is a really well looked after Theme Park and for anyone who hasn't been there yet....get yourself there if you can! 😁

First one from the next trip.

ArieForce One
Holy moly. This is staggeringly good. The first five big elements (drop, raven turn, stall, outerbank and airtime hill) are strong and powerful, and then it gets a bit mad with the zero-g which is taken at an unbelievable speed, then a bunch of crazy yeeting about before the bunny hills at the end. It's very good and never lets up. It also looks fantastic, the colour scheme is great.

The seats/restraints kinda suck, but they're RMC so no great surprise there, and they feed into the only real negative bit - that the bunny hills are pretty hard work on the thighs! And of course, another key complaint is the stupid ****ing name. :D

It's probably Top 5 material, definitely Top 10. I think it's better than Zadra (just), but still not pipping SteVe for the top spot yet - doing that layout twice is going to be very hard to beat.

But yes - very, very good.

Two worthy of the short thoughts today:

Twisted Cyclone
This is very good too! It always looked a bit janky in POVs to me - a bit like it might have been at risk of doing too much twisting about (see Storm Chaser's s-bend hill or Zadra's finale) - but it actually flowed really nicely. Same complaint about the trains sadly, but one of the best of the 'small' RMCs.

Goliath
This is always touted as one of the best B&M Hypers, and I'm inclined to agree! Great long sequence of big hills, powerful helix and still riding pretty smoothly overall. Not to mention its new paint job which looks excellent.
