Southeast USA – June 2025 {Day 7 – Go Karts & Gulf Coast}

I’d had a trip around this area stewing in my brain for some time, and after seeing some good flight options I thought I’d finally flesh this up into a proper trip. For an “American theme park road trip”, it’s not actually particularly cred-heavy, but it was a good excuse to see some of this area of the country I’ve not been to before and tick off some creds along the way.

Day 1 – Heading Out

Keeping this boring bit brief - it was a straightforward enough but long day. Simple trip to Heathrow, direct flight to Atlanta, some baggage faff in the airport due to a storm, a long queue at the rental car desk, but smooth sailing thus far. Bit of hassle with the rental car as the one they gave me originally had two broken (like, completely bent/buckled out of shape) windscreen wipers and a badly scratched/chipped windscreen – but they were relatively efficient in swapping me to another vehicle and I was finally in my hotel.

Day 2 – Atlanta & Fun Spot America

Jetlag kicked my arse hard on this trip (and the same on the way back – still suffering now!), so it was a restless night’s sleep and I was itching to get out of the room by about 7am. I grabbed some breakfast and did the obligatory grocery store run to stock up on various snacky things, and then headed towards downtown Atlanta for a bit of simple sightseeing.

Started off at the MLK Museum (with free all-day parking, result!), and have to admit overall this was a nice little museum complex. The life history and other people involved in his journey are something that hadn’t really come up in anything I’ve learned about him before, and it was very interesting and quite well put together. It’s all quite nearby itself (the museum, his birthplace – though under refurbishment so couldn’t tour that - and the tomb are all within a block or two of each other so it’s very accessible). I’d recommend.

From there, I took a short-ish walk into the city and generally just mooched about a bit. It was all quite pleasant actually. I also hadn’t realised that there would be a big Juneteenth parade heading through the part of the city near where I’d parked the car, so it was cool to see so much of a buzz and people out in the sun having a good time!

Now originally I had planned to take a few hours off in the middle of the day, and head over to Fun Spot in the evening, but the forecast was looking pretty terrible for the evening with another wave of storms passing through, so I decided I’d have a bite to eat for lunch and then head straight down to Fun Spot in the afternoon. Glad I did, in the end, as both evenings I was in Atlanta the weather would have shut down the coasters – which would have rendered evening trips to Fun Spot pointless.

Got there at the peak heat of the day, to a park which isn’t very friendly to the sunshine, so it was a hot afternoon! Anyway, started with the two creds right by the entrance – Hurricane and Sea Serpent. The latter is entirely forgettable, but Hurricane was entertaining enough. A bit rubbish, really, but some hilariously violent ejector in places.

D2N6Imn.jpeg

Okay, to the main event then. ArieForce One (god I hate the name, going to go for AFO for now) is quite striking as you approach the park from the road, and the outerbank hill draws you in even more once you’re in the park. Coaster was a walk-on all afternoon, with the ops happy for a few of us to just keep switching seats each lap as there was no-one in the queue. They were quite good in dispatching trains without doing anything silly like waiting for them to fill up, so it was easy to get plenty of laps in.

Here's a bit of a photo dump:

I took three laps initially, front, back and second back. Crikey this is a good coaster. The first five elements (drop, dive loop, stall, outerbank and airtime hill) have an excellent sense of scale and the forces are fantastic. After that, it drops into a very high-speed section which the first time goes by so quickly it’s hard to get a sense of where you’re going. Very smooth and flowing though, with none of that RMC jerkiness that some of these elements can have. Final row of airtime hills is great, but I admit after three consecutive laps were taking their toll on my thighs already! I can only imagine how good RMC’s would be if the trains didn’t suck…!

Anyway, time for a break from AFO and I headed over to the only other thing of any real interest to me in the park – the go karts. I love these ridiculous go kart structures in US parks and the funny little slow speed go karts – they’re not really like anything you get in Europe in my [limited] experience, and I always enjoy them.

hUFcSsR.jpeg

Right then, back to the main event for a couple more laps and some photos before I call it a day – was starting to flag quite a lot by this point given the jetlag and patchy night before, and frankly my thighs were starting to suffer.

Here, have a bunch more photos of AFO:

I headed back to the hotel, grabbed a pizza on the way, and had an early night. It’d be a long first day in a very hot Atlanta, and I was out for the count in no time!

Overall I quite liked Fun Spot. It felt a bit less dynamic than the other two in Florida, I think mostly due to the more spread out nature of it, but perhaps also the fact it was very quiet and the middle of the day as opposed to the evening.

Biggest park of the trip next. :)

Day 3 – Six Flags Over Georgia

Cracking into the next day straight away then –

From some good tips from @jay37415, @Sticky_T_Wicky @Hyde and @JJLehto, I’d moved SFOG to the Sunday and got there for opening. They were running Georgia Scorcher and Twisted Cyclone before the rope drop for the rest of the park, so was able to get on both of those early doors, which was handy.

I’m a big fan of the entrance to this park, with the coasters right up against the entrance. Great way to build excitement.

Georgia Scorcher was alright, but wouldn’t be going round for a second lap. Twisted Cyclone on the other hand was very good. I grabbed two laps first thing as it was virtually a walk-on. First drop a little off, but from there it’s a great sequence of elements – especially the very punchy outerbank hill. Another one of these ‘small’ RMCs that is fantastic and a great lease of life back into an otherwise redundant structure.

Headed back towards the other side of the park after this to work my way through the parks extensive line-up – been a while since I’ve been at a park as big as this.

Dare Devil Dive – better than I expected, but still not much above a mid-tier Eurofighter.

Riddler Mindbender – very enjoyable, actually. I love these vertical loops, the forces on them are great.

Batman – same as every other Batman – intense, compact, decent.

And shoutout of course to the spiteful Skyline creds. Pathetic.

I was making decent progress at this point, only about an hour after rope-drop and had already made good headway through one half of the park.

I stopped at Goliath next, and it was another walk-on so straight in to a front row ride. I love B&M Hypers, and this was one of the best ones I’ve done. It was smooth, fast, huge airtime hills and the helix was a cool touch. It also looks great with the new paint job!

Rode Monster Mansion next, which was unexpectedly great. Such a strange ride to have at the park, but equal parts charming and disturbing!

Similarly odd was the Joker Funhouse coaster – such a strange layout and location and just overall a bit weird. Not bad, for a kiddie cred, but weird for sure.

yIMia8R.jpeg

I pushed on to the back of the park (Georgia Gold Rusher was closed at this point with lots of high-vis jackets all over the launch track) towards Superman. Not done one of these flying coasters in ages, and had forgotten just how intense the pretzel loops are. Not really that good, but impressive!

VzifV7l.jpeg

Next round to two rides I expected to fizzle into nothing, but turned out to be much better than I expected. Both Great American Scream Machine and Blue Hawk were much smoother and more enjoyable than I was prepared for. Not to mention they both looked brilliant over the water in the back of the park with the hill dropping away in front of them. Felt very ‘not’ Six Flags.

At this point I was looking for some water and food, so took a walk back to the car to grab some refreshments and a break from the back-to-back walk-on coasters (I think I’m getting a bit old now, I can’t keep this up in this heat for that long anymore!). Had seen Georgia Gold Rusher operating while walking along, but as I was heading into the queue they announced it was down again, so I’ll come back for that later, I suppose.

Of course, on the way back in to the park there’s loads of great views of the big coasters.

I walked back in towards the Mine Train (which was entirely forgettable) but stopped for a quick lap on Twisted Cyclone while passing. Very nice.

7uvVviS.jpeg

After coming off the Mine Train, I could see Georgia Gold Rusher operating, so I made a bee-line for that to complete the park. Thankfully I got called forwards as a single rider so skipped a couple of cycles, at fear of it going down (again). I feel like I’m being overly negative about the coasters here, but this was just ‘fine’. It’s a decent filler attraction, but little more than that, really.

After that, it was just time for re-rides on Goliath and Twisted Cyclone. They were the only two rides I was particularly bothered to re-ride, and as they were each always one-two train waits it was a nice pace to round out the day. I left around 5pm, as I was getting pretty hungry and fancied some ‘proper’ food outside of the park.

Overall I liked SFOG more than I expected to, to be honest. It was much greener and less concrete-y than I expected, and it had a good variety of coaster types, including a couple of strong flagship coasters. The landscaping was nice and the terrain was hilly, which gave the park some good scenic variation throughout. I found the area around the middle of the park a bit frustrating with paths seemingly not connecting between areas you’d expect, but in the end I chalked that up to unfamiliarity with the park.

Had a great evening meal at a Mexican restaurant, and then headed back to the hotel with a few beers.

Heading out of Atlanta to the smaller parks next…

Day 4 –Lake Winnepesaukah & Birmingham

Okay, enough of these big proper parks, let’s get into some of these less well trodden ones.

Couple of hours north of Atlanta, and I arrived at Lake Winnepesaukah shortly after they opened. A very unassuming park entrance.

J4Z1DGz.jpeg

Struck me as quite a charming little local park as I wandered in and towards the first cred. Once ticked off, I decided to ride the crappy dark ride “Wacky Factory” on the way to Cannon Ball. It was, as expected, a bit crappy.

brOv5bt.jpeg

6OYauNi.jpeg

So the somewhat not main, main event – Cannon Ball. Walk on all day, and two very charming albeit very local ride ops seemed to be having a nice fun time operating the coaster (it’s got those manual friction brake things in the station). They were happily chatting away and engaging with riders and it was all quite nice really.

WgvRY2X.jpeg

ovzYPjV.jpeg

After a couple of laps, I decided I’d ride a few other attractions in the park. Started with the chairlift over the lake, which was nice and peaceful, and then their Boat Chute thing. This was very odd with a huge (huge!) pitch black tunnel at the start, and then a very rickety lift hill before a smooth drop and surprisingly elegant splashdown. Not bad for the oldest ride in the park (I think)! Also took a quick go on the ferris wheel, as I was walking right past.

I went back for a couple more laps on Cannon Ball, before taking a ride on the train round the perimeter of the park – partly as an excuse to get some photos and partly as an excuse to not have to walk back to the park entrance.

Some photos from this bit.

Overall I quite liked Lake Winnepesaukah – it’s been one of those parks I’ve known the name of for ages for some reason (though couldn’t really tell you why), and it’s a nice little place to spend a few hours. All the staff were very friendly and it was a straightforward park to explore.

I wanted to break up the drive down to my overnight stop, so I took a scenic detour through Little River Canyon National Preserve, which was very nice indeed. A lovely smooth twisty road, extremely peaceful, and some nice views.

I checked into my hotel and headed into downtown Birmingham for a look around and some dinner. Food was great, and the city had a nice feel to it, but there was a big storm coming in which curtailed the extent of my wandering. The couple of hours I had were pleasant enough, though.

After dodging the worst of the downpours, I headed back to the hotel.

Another similar day tomorrow…

Day 5 – Alabama Adventure & Biloxi

It was only a short drive across town to Alabama Adventure, so not a particularly rushed start to get there for opening. When I’d originally booked this trip, Rampage had been down all of 2024 for refurbishment and the park was advertising it as returning in 2025, so I thought it would be open by the time I was passing by. Sadly, they’ve still not reopened the coaster, making the park essentially pointless to visit, but I was coming past anyway so figured I’d get the creds – it’s unlikely I’ll ever be back.

Anyway, here’s a handful of photos and thoughts from the cred-run.

Wacky Worm – check.
Wild mouse – check.

Okay, what else…?

They had an old-school Tilt-a-Whirl, which I hadn’t done in ages, so gave that a spin, and then also tried out their laser maze thing called “The Vault”. Quite entertaining, I have to admit, but I also must confess that I’m neither flexible nor slim enough to actually do these!

Overall thoughts? Meh. +2 and done. Would have been made significantly better to get the woodie.

After being in the park for an hour or so, I’d had enough and headed out. I had a lengthy drive down to the Gulf coast, and the weather was starting to take a turn. I’m glad I left early in the end, as it ended up being slow going for a couple of hours in the middle of the drive as I pushed on through some large storms with very heavy rain.

By the time I got down to the Gulf coast itself, the skies had cleared and all that was left were isolated pockets of storms on the horizon. It was quite dramatic, to be honest.

SRUzAAT.jpeg

As I’d been able to make good time down to Biloxi, I made my way along the beach to the baseball stadium and grabbed a cheap ticket for a couple of hours to chill out. I’ve never watched baseball live before, so it was good fun to experience. I don’t really know the rules in detail, but got chatting with a few other spectators who explained some of the nuances, and had a good time overall.

I left the stadium and headed back towards the hotel for a bite to eat and some drinks.

It had been a very non-cred-y day, and the sort of thing I’m glad I make the effort to carve out in my trips. I don’t have the stamina for mega-trips anymore, and having some days like this suits me right down to the ground. I’m glad that the creds make me think to go to places like this.

Next up, starting to make my way back along the coast towards Florida.

Great reports so far @Hixee; I’ve really enjoyed reading them!

Out of curiosity, are you heading to the parks in Florida at all if you’ve now started heading back towards Florida?

Out of curiosity, are you heading to the parks in Florida at all if you’ve now started heading back towards Florida?
I'm heading towards a park in Florida, but not the ones you're on about. ;) This trip wasn't long enough for heading down there and all the faff days at those parks entail. One for another, dedicated, trip.

Day 6 – Gulf Coast Creds & Tropic Falls

Across the parking lot from the hotel was a Waffle House – a guilty pleasure of mine – so it was a no brainer for breakfast.

LU1rEez.jpeg

The park next to the hotel had shut their kiddie cred at some point in the weeks ahead of my trip, so I made tracks towards the next park a short drive down the beach. Some more of those dramatic local storms out to sea as well, which I was glad were a long way away.

OD6YxSY.jpeg

First park of the day was Paradise Pier Fun Park for a simple hamster wheel SBF thing on the roof of the car park (next door to some big casino thing).

b9xF88n.jpeg

pFp13lS.jpeg

In and out in ten minutes, perfect.

Next up was a ‘proper’ park – Tropic Falls. Car park was quite busy, and there’s an extensive waterpark and knock-off City Walk thing here. The park itself wasn’t too busy, but had a decent enough crowd. The entrance is quite striking – I’ll give them that.

bGwVkUH.jpeg

First coaster you come to as you walk in is the kiddie cred, so I quickly ticked that off before making my way to the back of the park for Rollin’ Thunder. You get some nice views of it as you walk down the length of it’s thin layout.

The coaster itself was a bit strange. Similar to the recent thoughts from @James F – it’s hard to know if this is good or bad.

Bucket seats? Comfy - good.
Restraints? Bulky and uncomfortable - bad.
First drop? Jolty - bad.
Loop? Smooth - good.
Following series of inversions? Jerky, rough and lumpy - bad.
Airtime? Strong – good.
Trims? Harsh – bad.

Overall, frankly, it’s more bad than good. I rode a second lap, because it was virtually a walk on, but after that I was happy to call it quits. Didn’t warrant a third lap, that’s for sure. The three-across trains are unique, at least.

I made my way round to their dark shooter thing – which I have next to no memory of now without looking it up. Over-riding memory was “oh good, this air conditioning feels good”, and that the blasters didn’t work very well.

Right outside the shooter was the final cred of the park, a standard spinning mouse thing. Next.

FT80PlN.jpeg

A short drive down the road to one of these go kart places with an SBF spinner. Spinner was fine, but the go karts were on point. I love these goofy things.

My stop for the night was in Pensacola, so I had a nice leisurely stroll round their historic/downtown bit. It had some nice architecture, lots of nice atmosphere spilling out from bars and restaurants and whatnot.

xJerTow.jpeg

bZnLVB2.jpeg

Finished up with a huge BBQ meal from a gluten free establishment. It was excellent, and I felt very content as I drifting off to sleep with a big full belly!

Only one cred next, but another very chilled day.

Day 7 – Go Karts & Gulf Coast

So this day had always been planned in as a no-cred day, but as I’d been working my way though all these little parks on the coast, I thought I might as well check to see if any (that I could be bothered with) were on route. Turns out that there were really only two that seemed worth the effort.

The day mostly consisted of following the coastal highway (Hwy 98, if anyone cares) from Pensacola to Tallahassee, stopping when the views, snack need, or interest took me.

The first section was along the Gulf Islands National Seashore, which was quite lovely actually. The threat of these giant supercell-type storms ever looming!

TQHGUdt.jpeg

waP0VwH.jpeg

First park was a sister/chain park of The Track place the day before. The credit on my card worked here too, which was convenient. Coaster was the usual SBF affair, although they do run it with a gratuitous amount of laps (I lost count around 8-9), so the kids love it of course! They’ve also got another excellent go kart track (I think this one was the best of the trip, actually, but much harder to see from anywhere within the park), and then to use up the last few dollars on the card I tried their “slick track” thing. Suffice to say that about 20% of the time you can execute the perfect drift and you feel like you’re in Fast and Furious, but the rest of the time you don’t get anywhere close. The sort of thing I can imagine you could get very good at somehow… :D

2m3Vll5.jpeg

W0G3ESU.jpeg

Another hour or so down the road was another one of these little park places, but promising a more substantial coaster. When I arrived though, it was fairly clear that this coaster wasn’t operating (and hasn’t been for a number of weeks). It appears that they’ve had it all apart to repaint it, but there was no sign of any activity on the site at all. Shame, would have been nice to tick that one off. Hey-ho!

0PwbEmo.jpeg

I don’t have any pictures for the rest, but it was another few hours relatively relaxed drive into Tallahassee. The hotel was a bit sketchy – very centrally located, which was nice, but the pictures on their website had been doing some heavy lifting and the quality had slipped somewhat. Suppose that’s what I get for looking at the cheap end of the bracket…!

Anyway, I checked in and then made my way into the centre of town for a wander around the state capitol. It was pleasant enough, but as had become the theme for this trip, the evening’s milling about was cut short by another thunderstorm.

5CvP3EO.jpeg

So I grabbed some leisurely dinner and headed to bed.

Last park of the trip next.
