Roller Coaster TV Programs and Other Related Videos

Random YT algorithm served me a Shining movie filming locations (LINK), which was great (worth watching if you are a Shining fan - the hotel interiors on a sound stage compared to their inspiration, just wow!).

Anyway, the channel had a National Lampoon's Vacation locations too (also great), here's the Walley World / Magic Mountain stuff;

It would seem as though the upcoming new series of The Secret Genius of Modern Life with Professor Hannah Fry on BBC Two will have a roller coaster episode, with the trailer showing shots of her riding Hyperia and walking by Colossus at Thorpe Park:

The new series starts on 2nd April, but I’m not sure which episode will feature theme park rides (I seem to remember hearing it was episode 3, but don’t quote me on that, as I can’t seem to find this information anywhere online now).

I can’t wait; the first two series of this were excellent! Hannah Fry is an excellent presenter, and definitely not unwilling to go slightly geeky at times, so I think it could be an interesting watch!

Looks like it is Episode 3, which I guess makes it Wednesday 16th?

It’s also on BBC iPlayer now as I watched it yesterday and a very interesting show it was as well, I mean it had a lot of stuff I knew already but was a great insight 😀

BBC Panorama tonight (Mon 16th June) - it's on iPlayer in the UK now too;

Associated news atricle;

EDIT : Watched it. Basically "funfairs unsafe, shoddy standards" (no kidding!). very brief mention of a coaster accident (the Lightwater Valley / Ladybird one in 2012) but that was not put into any context with regard to the rest of the investigation.

Also, Dollywood have released this ~40min documentary/promo piece (I'm not meaning to be cynical) "history of Dollywood" around its 40th anniversary.

It's good - original history from pre-Silver Dollar City days and (briefly) interviews a lot of the original people (the Herschends, original park managers etc).

Anyway, worth a watch IMHO;

I read the article as don't have iPlayer access. Very shoddy journalism, 320 incidents a year, including trips/falls. No information about how many are actually ride incidents, no information about how many are serious, no information about how that compares to number of riders and no information to compare with other industries. Renders it entirely useless and uninformative. I can only comment on the article not the programme, but I would expect the BBC to be able to make an article about their own programme so assume the programme is also a waste of time.

I watched it last night. I agree some of the statistics are very vague and they don't go into details. A lot of it was interviews with people involved in accidents and industry insiders. It was an OK watch but a very brief overview. Some of the inspection failures raised were concerning but I didn't really get what the BBC wanted to achieve from this insight really?
