Who likes there rides rough? I always here complaints about rides not being smooth, hurting, being too rough, giving you bruises, BUT in my opinion, that's what makes a roller coaster :--D
Amound my favourites in the UK are Corkscrew, Ultimate, Pepsi Max Big One, Colossus, Saw (although I still fail to see how that's rough), Wipeout (also not too rough but hey), and the old woodies at Blackpool, Infusion (though I don't really consider it a favourite), love them all!

No particually, though I did love Corkie and all good woodies have some element of roughness to them that gives it the true woodie experience. But on steel coasters, I do prefer them to be less rough.

Generally, if a woodie has some roughness to it, I can simply accept it. Sometimes it does make the ride a little more wild, which I cannot complain about.

On a steel coaster however, I become instantly dissapointed by roughness I think the ride becomes totally spoiled by it. Although, The Ultimate I can accept.

On woodies it's ok, I think it's acceptable, and its what gives them character (although I think that excuse is overused to try and make it acceptable to build rough rides)

Steel on the other hand should not be rough. If you come off a ride with a headache (like I did on Saw), it is not right.

I love a wild ride. Maverick and Magnum, and even Vampire and Rattlesnake are ride experinces that wouldn't be the same exceptionally smooth.

I might count Ravine Flyer 2 in there aswell. Smooth for a woodie, but gives you a good beating around the corners which makes it more fun!

Obviously back jaring, up the arse roughness, brain rape is not the way to take it, like Mean Streak.

I don't find Saw, Rage or Colossus at all. Actually the eurofighters need the whippyness, I think. Rage is like a less sharp Maverick to me with the corners. Which is what I feel Saw lacks other than the dive loop.

No.

Rough coasters always give me a pounding headache, which then spoils the rest of the day.

A little bit of rough is acceptable,a lot isn't.

No, 99.99% of the time. I get bad headaches, and it makes-or-breaks a ride for me, like RVII

It depends. I hate rough steel coasters, but certain woodies are better rough than smooth.

To an extent, I mean, I don't like a coaster rough enough to actually hurt me, like Son of Beast, but if it has a bit of headbanging or throws you around a little bit, especially if it's a wooden coaster, then it's fine. Snoo gave a good example of Voyage.. Definitely throws you around, but it's an amazing ride.

The wierd thing is, I've been on over 400 coasters right, and I have rarely found pain on any, the last time I remember experiencing pain was a couple of years ago on the Big One as it bruised my legs, which made it go from being one of my favourite rides to somewhere near the bottom.
I hit the side of The Ultimate on the curves at the end, and It wasn't really enough pain to worry about even. None of the rides at Thorpe give me pain, no SLCs or Boomerangs that I can remember have hurt me, sometimes If I try to keep my mouth closed on rides I bite my tongue, but I still don't think that's enough to be class as pain, even Gwazi, people told me I was going to experience sheer pain, it wasn't really to me, I don't know what the secret is so don't ask.

Yes, but only if the restraints and seats are comfortable.

I like to feel a coaster's power, and smooth rides just aren't as good as rough ones...

That said, if a ride is rough, and the restraints are crap, i.e. old vekoma, then I often have to concentrate more on keeping myself from breakage than enjoying the ride...

If you know how and when to brace on a ride then roughness is awesome - eg. Wild Mouse - Blackpool

Well firstly, I've never had "up the arse roughness" from a coaster but ok...

I get what you mean though. It pretty much depends on the coaster. Each coaster has its own roughness thats unique to it and should be kept like that. Nemesis for instance has a bit of roughness that makes the ride, however Montu has the smoothness that is needed to make that ride.

Woodies, sometimes they give me pounding headaches and then other days they won't. I think it coincides with how much I drink...
Woodies NEED roughness as to everyone thats what they've grown up with and they may as well be sitting in a steel coaster if it is that smooth. Thats why woodie lovers like the roughness of them.

Some rides, such as Voyage, are worth a little beating

Thats how I feel really. If its a small coaster, then it has to be smooth, but I dont mind a good beating on a large coaster, such as Odyssey.

If a coaster actually causes me to bleed (Stampida), I don't like it rough. I can cope with bruises and fissures, but when it comes to blood... :(

Rough IS a fun game to an extent. None of this "it's only acceptable if it's on a woodie" bollocks! Roller coasters are SUPPOSED to be rough, unless stated otherwise by the manufacturer

I love the out of control feeling on coasters that rumble and bash you a bit, the subconscious thought that perhaps it is not going to last the circuit and death will ensue. Not likely I know, but having the thought there makes me more on edge and therefore I enjoy the ride more.

However, there are exceptions. I have maintained for a while now that I would rather castration by spoon than Saw: The Occasionally Working Ride. Most of the ride is lovely. Apart from the bottom of the main drop that is! OW! It's 1 moment that spoils an entire ride, forget the theming, we all know that's **** anyway. Sorry Ollie but it is. But the worst bit is, it's a new ride. WTF?!?!?

Obviously Pinfari Loopers of Death are evil, but that's a given :P

I dont mind rough coasters as long as there is some fun involved.

Gwazi was a bit rough but I really enjoyed it.

Space Mountain Paris is rough and not fun, that goes for Ghostrider as well. No coaster should leave you in pain for the rest of the day.

There is not an option for me to vote, so I won't.

Quite right Marc. Totally agree.

Bashing is OK, acceptable even. But continual pain afterwards is NOT allowed.

There are certain rides that benefit from being rough. Rides like The Ultimate, Grand National and Blackpool's Wild Mouse wouldn't be anywhere near as fun as they are if they weren't so insanely brutal.

That said, there are very few rides that really benefit from being rough. Here's a question though - why do some rides benefit from roughness? Most of the time, if a coaster is uncomfortably rough, that's a big black mark against it. Why are rides like The Ultimate different?
