Wings 3D is free, and supports PC, Mac and Linux.

It's very powerful (Loefet used it for his Tesla project and others have also made some incredible scenery with it), but like all these things, you'll need to commit time to learning it.

I highly recommend Wings 3D. I love it and have been able to make some great stuff with it. It may seem daunting at first but the more you play around with it it soon become super easy to use.
Loefet has a topic with tutorials telling you how to use it and is good at helping out and answering any questions you might have.
But yeah. Wings is certainly the best and easiest way for someone new to making 3D objects. Plus it's free.
