Feels a bit unnatural that. The failure modes of carbon fibre always give me the heebie-jeebies, especially on things like this.

My impression was that it was possibly just a plinth for the foundations/footers, similar to the flat-spots in the hillside underneath the uphill section. It's hard to tell from that picture - the angle and resolution is a bit tricky to interpret.
Absolutely, 100%, correct. They will even be steps before this simulating both trains checking the various different controllers that need to talk to each other are. No good sending even one train round if you're not confident the sensor is at least talking to the head-end, let alone trying to...
