Chessington World of Adventures can lay claim to be the UK's first proper theme park. The park began life as a zoo in 1931 and rides were added in 1897. These rides were not just additions, they were well themed and created a whole new park experience, something which the UK had hardly seen before.Several decades on, the park has over 60 individual attractions, including four roller coasters, water rides, a zoo, a Sea Life Centre and a hotel. Every one is catered for. |

Chessington World of Adventures started life in 1931 as a zoo. In the mid-80's, the then owners, Madame Tussauds Ltd. decided to inject life into the ailing attraction. In 1987, attractions were built alongside the zoo to create what is now known as Chessington World of Adventures.
The empahsis remained on the zoo, with the Safari Skyway monorail taking riders on a scenic tour of the animal enclosures. The central area, Market Square, featured themed stalls and shops to aid the escapism that a theme park offers. Dragon Falls (or Dragon River as it was then) was the "big" ride of the moment, a superbly themed log flume set in an oriental setting. The Runaway Train also opened in 1987.
In 1990, Chessington World of Adventures surprised the UK with another well themed area; Transylvania. Spooky music and buildings with grand Romanian facades dominated the area. To compliment this theme, two rides opened, the Vampire roller coaster and the Bubbleworks, both of which are still high on the agenda of every guest.
As teh years passed by, other themed lands were built at the park. Mexicana is a Mexican based world with rides, food shops and gaming stalls adequately themed. Land of the Dragons opened in 2004 featuring the Dragon's Fury roller coaster and several fantasy themed rides for children. Chessington World of Adventures entered into a 10 year contract with Beano to create a land based on the popular comic. When the Beanoland contract expired in 2009, it was transformed to Wild Asia, a land of African mystique and discovery.
Although the park does predominantly cater for young families, there is something in every area for everybody to enjoy. There are roller coasters, water rides, flat rides, playgrounds, spiny rides, a Sea Life Centre and, of course, the zoo. The zoo is open on selected days during the closed season.
Food at the park is the typical theme park fare. There is a Burger King, a buffet pizza restaurant and several own-brad stalls that sell healthy food. The food is also themed to the areas. For example, in Wild Asia, you can buy a kebab and in Mystic East, you can buy Chinese food.
We would strongly recommend visiting during the October half term when the park runs a Halloween themed event. Not only can you ride the attractions in the dark, but special shows and effects can be found throughout the park.
