"The world's scariest ride experience" - or so the hype machine told us.
Once again, John Wardley too the reins on a major Alton Towers project and came up with the spooky, triskaidekaphobia inducing ride Th13teen (yes, spelled like that). Replacing the famed Corkscrew, Th13teen was a pretty large project, with the station construction being part of the most major Alton theming for the best part of ten years. |

The hype machine began very early, with reports trickling in about Th13teen being “the world’s first Psycoaster”; a roller coaster that is as psychologically scary as it is great as a ride. As a “Secret Weapon”, a lot of hope was held out for this to be a stunning coaster with a stunning addition (previous secret weapons include Nemesis, Oblivion and Air).
This angle was really pushed, and when the ride opened, obviously there was a lot of high expectation.
The truth is somewhat different… The ride itself is a fairly standard, tame, family mine train type of ride. It’s been given a horror overhaul to add to the effect and the world’s first secret section (the world’s worst kept secret in fact) to add to the thrills.
As a family style coaster, it’s certainly not a bad ride. It does up the thrill levels of this kind of attraction a few notches. However, even the best ride in the world would have struggled to meet the hype surrounding the ride and as such, the ride was generally met with an air of disappointment.
Ignoring the hype, Th13teen is a solid, well themed family coaster; and more than an adequate replacement for the aging Corkscrew.
