A recent news article run in the LA Times posed the idea of Six Flags Magic Mountain one day reclaiming its title as the roller coaster capital of the world from its rival park Cedar Point.
“Will Six Flags Magic Mountain gain back the coaster capital status?" Six Flags CEO Mark Shapiro asked. "In due time, absolutely.”
Cedar Point tied with SFMM for the title with the addition of Maverick this year, giving both parks a roller coaster count of 17. SFMM took a hit though with the demolition of Psyclone and Flashback, dropping its coaster tally to 15.
SFMM is currently tied for second with Canada's Wonderland for most roller coasters, but will add a family coaster in 2009 to boost their count to 16.
Regardless, Cedar Point isn't giving up the title without a fight.
“Being the roller coaster capital is very important to us,” said Cedar Point’s spokesman Robert Innes.
“We plan to expand,” said Innes. “I think it’s safe to say there are coasters in our future, but we don’t have a timetable.”
