The TOGO company was founded in Japan by Kazou Yamada, building its first coaster at Hanayashiki Amusuement Park, Tokyo, in 1953. This coaster is still in operation today. |
TOGO has a reputation, among many enthusiasts at least, for creating very rough, uncomfortable coasters. However, general concensus seems to indicate that while this may be true of TOGO's coasters in the U.S.A, their coasters in Japan fair a lot better. This could be down to better maintenance by the extremely safety conscious, Japanese parks.
A lot of TOGO's negative publicity came from a court case brought against them by Knott's Berry Farm, who tried, unsuccessfully, to claim $17 million dollars damages from TOGO, citing problems with their "Windjammer" roller coaster.
Even though they might not be amongst the most popular coaster companies, TOGO have, nevertheless, played a very important role in the amusement park industry, coming up with some very unique, inovative ideas, which designers from other companies have used as inspiration for their own products.
