Terra Encantada - RIP
On June 19th, 2010 a man was thrown from the ex-world record holder ride Monte Makaya. The local government stepped in and deemed the park unsafe and the park owners liable for manslaughter. The park closed immediately and there is little chance of it ever reopening.
The park had suffered from all kinds of troubles since its (twice failed) initial opening in 1998. Gate figures were lower than expected and the park was the scene of injuries and riots (during a concert held at the park). All in all, Terra Encantada has a relatively short and fraught life.
Following is the park guide written on CoasterForce in 2005 by Ian Bell and Felix Quatke.

Terra Encantada is one of Brazil's biggest theme parks, with a large variety of rides ranging from the 8-inversion Monte Makaya to gentle rapids rides.

Monte Makaya once held the world record jointly with Port Aventura's Dragon Khan for having the most inversions (at the time, 8) on coaster. It is somewhat ironic that the world record was stolen from these two by Thorpe Park with a ride that essentially just added two extra inline twists to Monte Makaya's 4 year old design. Monte Makaya is the biggest steel coaster in Brazil, and is widely considered to be very good. |
