Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom - RIP
In February 2010, Six Flags issued this statement:
"Six Flags announced today that it has decided to reject its lease with the Kentucky State Fair Board relating to the Kentucky Kingdom park. In recent weeks, Six Flags had proposed a new lease arrangement to the fair board that would have enhanced the viability and future of the park. Unfortunately, those proposals were not accepted and the park will cease operations and the company will move expeditiously to re-locate employees and several of the more than 40 rides and attractions to one of its 13 other markets." "We are deeply disappointed to be leaving such a great fan base in the greater metropolitan area of Louisville and we are grateful to the thousands of employees at Kentucky Kingdom and the millions of guests for their dedication, support and loyalty over the years," said Mark Shapiro, Six Flags President and CEO. |
| Chang |
|
|
Probably the most impressive steel coaster at the park, Chang is a stand-up coaster that takes the rider through a long journey of many inversions. Riders can expect to be inverted five times in total during the 150 second ride. The track travels close to the ground, over pathways and through some trees. The fenced in area around the coaster looks almost desolate. No attempt at themeing is visible, unless you count mud and sparse vegetation. Rides of this nature have a tendency to be rough, however, Chang actually feels relatively smooth and forceful. There do not seem to be any dead sections of track and the inversions and turns are large giving a sense of space. Best ride is at the front. Type: Stand up
Opened: 1997
Speed: 63 mph
Height: 154 ft
Cost: $12m
Manufacturer: B&M
Relocated to Six FLags Great Adventure as "Green Lantern"

A Vekoma suspended looping coaster (SLC) that is sure to disorientate most riders. With five inversions, speedy drops towards the ground and a bit of interaction from the terrain, this coaster has some punch to it. Opened: 1995
Manufacturer: Vekoma
Speed: 50 mph
Duration: 1 min 36 secs
Height: 102 ft

| Thunder Run |
|
|
Thunder Run is a ferocious wooden coaster. With nothing exceptional to offer, it's a pretty average wooden coaster. It's very fast and has some good air time hills but seems somewhat unadventurous. Opened: 1990
Speed: 53 mph
Height: 90 ft
Manufacturer: Dinn Corporation

| Greezed Lightnin' |
|
|
On this ride, the train is launched out of the station (0-57mph in six seconds), through a vertical loop and up a 70 degree angled piece of track. Eventually gravity takes control and the train coasts backwards along the track, through the loop, through the station and up a piece of track the other end. Only then does it come to a rest. Greezed Lightnin' resided at two other Six Flags parks before relocating to Kentucky Kingdom. Type: Shuttle looping coaster
Height: 138 ft
Opened: 2003
Manufacturer: Schwarzkopf

| Twisted Twins |
|
|
A cracking little racing coaster that almost duels at times. Both sides have an equal advantage (track lengths are both 3000 ft) and offer two differnt ride experinces...first one back to the station wins! During queit periods, the ride ops allow you to cross the station to the other train without queuing! The tracks are named "Lola" and "Stella". The ride was originally called "Twisted Sisters" but changed names when a rock group of the same name threatened to sue in 2002. Opened: 1998 |

It goes up, around a few sharp turns, does a little drop, bland bit. few more sharp turns, bland bit, drop, bland bit, bland bit, etc. Yawn. These coasters tend to have a very slow through-put so if you're fussed about doing it, do it early or very late. Even if you miss it, you can always do this coaster at practically any big park in the world! Opened: 2000
Manufacturer: Maurer Sohne
Speed: 28 mph

| Roller Skater |
|
|
A simple but fun kiddie coaster, themed around a roller skate, where you sometimes get two circuits per ride! Opened: 1994
Speed: 22mph
Height: 28 ft
Manufacturer: Vekoma
