Ocean Beach - RIP
After the second world war, Rhyl boasted a new addition to it's fairground. Between the Marine Lake and the Seafront, Ocean Beach was opened to give expansion possibilities to the Marine Lake fairground.Rhyl and Marine Lake already had a good reputation as terms of a thrill seeker destination. Though not as large as some of its competitors such as Southport and Blackpool; Marine Lake, and now Ocean Beach, both boasted the title of Wales premier fairground and visitor destination.
It soon became clear that the Ocean Beach site was more popular, and due to leasing issues, Marine Lake was closed in 1969/1970. Ocean Beach lived on with its compliment of thrill rides (like a wooden wild mouse, very similar to that of Blackpool's) and wooden roller coaster.
During the 70's and 80's, Ocean Beach continued to invest in the latest fairground thrill rides. The wooden coasters made way for new steel coasters, including a Schwarzkopf looper. Rhyl stood against the tides of change as holiday makers took cheap package holidays abroad. By the late 80's though, cracks were starting to show. Rhyl itself was losing popularity as a tourist destination, and the town gradually became more and more run down. Despite attempts to improve the area, it has all been too late for Ocean Beach. The area (as you can see in the picture and review below from 2005) was beyond redemption and the council have put in place plans for a new development of the park area (including such wonders as an ASDA superstore). 2006 was sadly the last season for this park, but some would say that it was more a case of putting it out of its misery. |
Next to Tir Prince, less than a mile away, Rhyl Ocean Beach looks miserable, delapidated and on its last legs, as the town further falls from its late 80's hayday into the place described by the tourist board as "where junkies go to die". Around the grounds of the fair, are boarded up, burnt-out night clubs, and around everywhere corner are hooded yobs. Never the less, there are four credits to be had here, and also the log ride is now the only Side Friction water flume left, after Blackpool tore down theirs. I would advise against travelling to this area of North Wales unless you are able to protect yourself against the constant muggings and beatings that occur here.

If you're after a cheap, probably unsafe rollercoaster ride, then you can do worse than this, but its not really anything special. Recently received a paint job though! |

This ride has been at Rhyl for a very long time, however in 2003 it went away, only to come back in 2004 with a new paint job and a new location at the front of the park. |

A classic, and a great ride when its open. Blackpool tore theirs down, so this is the only one left, but it doesnt look like its going to last forever, so ride it whilst you can! |

A small powered coaster, not much fun, a bit 'meh'. |
