Tutorial 2 - Vertical Loop
| NL Tutorial 2 - Vertical Loop |
|
The vertical loop is one of the most common inversions found on a rollercoaster. They can provide high G forces and sometimes create a floating sensation at the top.
In Nolimits, a loop can be made from as little as 2 track segments, however it is often better to use 3 segments to control pumping throughout the loop. There are many different ways in which people choose to build certain elements, but this method works best for me.
First, select the side view of the loop and build a nice smooth 90 degree curve upwards, so that the track is now vertical. Click the end vertex, and select the "rell roll" feature, which should produce a upwards curve, so the train would be travelling vertically upwards.
Now build another track segment, with the end vertex at the same height as the 90 degree point. Select this vertex and make sure it is also "rell roll." Now move the control points of the two vertexes to produce a nice, smooth top to the loop.
Now we need to create the exit of the loop. Insert another track segment, and this time make sure that the final vertex is at the same height as the entrance to the loop. Move the control points so that a loop shape is formed.
Now we have a lovely shaped loop, however you may notice that the entrance and exit collides with each other. This can be seen from the top view.
To avoid this, we need to shape the loop so that it looks like a "z" from the top. This mean that we need to move the exit of the loop to the right (or left). Also, to keep the loop smooth, move the middle two vertexes so that they are equally spaced between the entrance and exit.
To finish the loop, we need to smooth out the directional change. To do this view the loop from the front or back, and select one of the middle vertexes. Move the control points of this to tilt the the loop.
Now you should have a perfect loop. It might be necessary to slightly change the shape, or move control points to reduce any pumping.
