Coaster Force

Theme or Fun?
By: Nemesis Inferno (22/06/2006)

How many times have we heard someone go, 'Y ride would look so MUCH better with Z theme/theming'?

Too many tbh, and even though I've sais it countless times recently, it's becoming very true for many parks, the theming isn't as important as the attraction...

Now for me, the theme completes and compliments the ride in question, what if MiB just had cardboard cut-outs instead of 3-D alien animatronics?  What about Dueling Dragons' Q? Would the overall experience be as good if you were walking through a RITA-style cattlepen? Nope...

Now too look at England...What have we had recently, RITA, G-Force, Stealth are of course the three main coasters in the past two years which will spring to one's mind, yet on each, the theming is minimal...

Of course G-Force manages to sneak away un-noticed with the rest of Drayton, since the most themed ride seems to be the tacky PotC ride, a dark ride suprisingly...

RITA and Stealth however, do look out of place when considering some of the parks theming elsewhere, look at Nemesis at Alton, or Colossus at Thorpe, both traditional Wardley & Tussauds coasters, with the pathways, weaving near to the rides, almost intertwining with them, yet RITA and Stealth look as if it was the only space available and that were quickies...

My main problem is that they both could've been themed as NON-RACING!! Schlock horror yes, but I'm daring...RITA is the worst, Thorpe have indeed made an attempt, but yet if you're keeping the Amity theme, would you go drag-racing on your beach as the town is getting hit by Tidal Wave after Tidal Wave? Nope, course not, perhaps a better idea would be as another 'au naturale' disaster, the station being a broken building, mist covering the launch track as you launch would make things much more interesting for my point of view...

RITA cannot be easily re-themed, and tbh honest, has the worst placement EVAR...What were they thinking/smoking? Just like with Spinball really...

The thing however, is cash, money...Theming costs more, and by doing patchy theming, you save money, which can be used for other things, such as the staff fireworks or bubbly at the meetings to quote the Nationwide advert dude... Of course Universal and Disney can afford this, since the parks aren't the main source of profit, the films/movies are, other companies don't have this liesure...Some like Cedar Fair, use an AMUSEMENT park scheme, low theme, less hassle, this works only if ALL outdoor rides follow it, much like Blackpool, again much like it, on a tackier scale... Of cours, all dark rides need theming, however, with the Bubbleworks disaster/cock-up/etc. it seems that even then, minimal stuff is being done to reduce money loss...

You just have to compare some of the USA parks to England, and I wonder sometimes, we have height limits, yet why don't we get more Nemesis-style, then look across the Channel, Disney Paris, Phantasialand, each one is slowly pissing in our shoes and making us smell it, (and that's just the ant from Bobbejaanland)...

When you have rides so well themed in your park, you gotta compliment them in other areas as well, lest you make your park tacky and bad-looking, yet it seems that it hasn't mattered recently, I thought the customer was always right, nice things, subtle touches, gone for profit...

Shame...
