Alton Towers is the UK's premier Theme Park. Amongst the beautiful gardens, lakes, and forests are some of the most intense rides in existence. Whether it be Oblivion or the Ug Bugs; Nemesis or the Tea Cups; Air or the Squirrel Nutty Ride, Alton Towers has a plethora of High-Adrenaline, state-of-the-art attractions. Alton Towers often has problems getting new rides due to strict planning laws which prevent them from building rides above tree height. This is often a hidden blessing as rides must be buried in the ground, creating un-rivaled experiences. Alton Towers continues to add new attractions every year, ensuring the magic never ends!

Park History

Alton Towers was occupied by the Earls of Shrewsbury from the 15th Century, but it was the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury that transformed the surrounding landscape into what it is today...
The gardens were first opened to the public in 1860 and attracted many visitors. However in the early 20th century the Earl's family fortunes were dwindling and the land was sold to a local businessman. Alton Towers ltd. was formed in 1924, but in 1939 it was taken over by the armed forces for training of military personel.
When the gardens re-opened, rides were added in the 70's, many of which still exist today. The park added the Corkscrew rollercoaster in 1980, cementing the park's future as a top attraction in the UK.
In the 80's, more rides were added, and the park was purchased by the Tussaud's Group in 1990.

John Wardley, an employee of the new owners, set to work designing new rides and attractions that brought Alton Towers into it's slot as the UK's No.1 Theme Park. His rides, such as Nemesis, Oblivion and Air, have ensured Alton Towers is at the forefront of technology and creativity.

I'm not so bothered about the woodie or the "so-called" rumoured launch coaster (1's enough and that one is
dissapointing :[) I'm more interested in whats going to be replaced with Black hole. I hope they can fit a decent flat
in there.

Oblivion and Nemesis blew my mind, Rita, however, didn't, I found that after the launch it was very boring. And I am
ashamed to say i whimped out on Air, because something about it worries me

How can you say that thorpe is better...they are sister parks, they're both pretty much the same, except thorpe has
great flat rides, alton has amazing coasters

I do not expect them to build a new one every year and I Know the restrictions make it very hard. But I was just
expressing an opinion on what I would like to see. With regards my statement about Thorpe Park overtaken Alton Towers,
not all of us can reach TP without traveling over 4 hours. So yes I would Like Alton Towers to stay at the top of the
pile. Cheers.

Dude, they try there best to make another damn coaster but because of all the restrictions it would be very risky (You
can't just expect a new coaster every single year!!). Also Alton Towers and Thorpe are owned by the same company, so it
doesn't matter.

I go to Alton Towers about six times a year and I think its about time they add a new coater. If they are not careful
Thorpe Park might overtake them.

I love Alton Towers, been going for nearly 25 years and still love it. I think for the park it is tho, there
rollercoasters should be longer-all of them!

Okay, Debateably best themepark in UK. But i think Thorpe park is a tad better simply because of the queues. Go thorpe
park on a weekday and your going to get on a ride within 5 mins. At alton towers ull be queuing at least 20

great rides (especialy nemesis!) and plenty of other atractions to keep you busy. Its only downside is the que lenght so
i suggest if you go to buy a fastpass and it will save you a lot of time.

Good park with good coasters. The themeing is good and the coasters are good. Nemesis is my favourite ride at Alton
Towers. The flats are alright. I love Ripsaw. The park closes abit early though. I was there at the end of June and the
rides started closing at 5pm. Great park with a good atmosphere.

Alton Towers is the most unique theme park in the world, you won't find anywhere else that combines a place of such
natural beauty with some of the world's best rides. The planning restrictions may be strict, but that is one of the best
things about Alton, it forces the rides to be designed with originality. You don't find any cloned coasters (apart from
Corkie but thats a prefab and has been around forever), the rides are as breathtaking as the surroundings. Alton is one
very few parks that is a true experience to visit, it's not another souless concrete slab with huge coasters towering
into the sky, one minute you can be walking in lush gardens the next you can be hurtling round the track. Since I first
visited Alton 21 years ago it has never stopped amazing me and hopefully never will.
